Orientation Program
The Orientation program is a one year curriculum for new members. It begins with an opening retreat in late February and continues with half or whole day sessions every three to four weeks until early December.
Opening Retreat
Beginning on a Thursday and finishing Saturday evening, the in-residence retreat is designed to:
- Help retreat participants learn about their own personal effectiveness by exploring individual temperament, communication skills, learning styles, and social interactions. In addition to self-awareness, participants explore the styles of others and methods of inter-relating to improve effective leadership.
- Explore community structure and needs, with a special focus on the roles of effective community leadership. The retreat participants will discuss the idea that beyond the goal of effective leadership is an understanding of the larger concept of community.
- Allow retreat participants to practice leadership skills that they will later apply in meeting the challenges of our community.
- Help retreat participants gain insight into how they can help others do what they do better. As a result, retreat participants are helped to assess their own personal effectiveness and to become even better community minded leaders.
The sessions that follow the opening retreat fall under four categories that are components that the Chautauqua Leadership Network defines as leadership development activities.
